The Senses – Touch, Sight,Hearing

Tonight we started thinking about how it would feel if we couldn’t use our hands, our first activity was drawing round our hands and filling in the empty space with all the things we use our hands for.

This led on to discussing the way we use touch and how people who don’t have the use of their hands manage to communicate, their are some amazing artists out there who paint with their feet! (I challenged the cubs to bring in a picture they had drawn with their feet, lets see how may manage to do it, I will keep you posted!)  how do people who are blind use their fingers differently to us? This sense is heightened in a blind person so  we  did some work with Braille, we had a braille catalogue and newsletter for the cubs to look at which was completely fascinating, also we did a couple of activities using the braille alphabet.

We  had one of our parent helpers who works with deaf people showing them some sign language and discussing how people communicate with their hands, as a result of this we had the cubs signing the alphabet and their names and doing activities with the signing alphabet in groups of three.

It was a really interesting night and all the cubs seemed to participate with enthusiasm. Thanks to Ruth our parent helper for her talk about sign language and showing the cubs how easy it is to say a few simple words using our hands.

This picture was done by Finlay and won our competition to see who could do the best picture using their feet or mouth.

This amazing picture was painted by an artist called Tom Yendell. He was a victim of Thalidamide and was born with no arms.
