We have had an interesting three weeks.
The first of the three was a knot night. Now i’m not a fan of knots and to tell the truth am a bit rubbish at them; but I do know the reef knot (lame I know) so that is the one we did.It was realy good, we seperated the cubs into their sixes and each six practiced doing their knot with their adult helper. We then played a game with benches, chairs a river and ropes where they had to dismantle a structure one one side of the river and get it over to the other side without getting their feet wet and re-assemble it on the other side.It worked really well and all our cubs learn’t how to do the Reef knot result!!
The second week was our Culture and Religion night for the Global Challenge. Each cub had to bring in some interesting information about the country they were on Food of the World night. We had the big map out on the wall and most of the cubs had remembered to bring in some information about their country, some of them did really well and researched it themselves with just a little help and others just printed it off from Wikipida (you know who you are)some of them even knew were their country was on the map. It was an interesting night with lots of facts and figures. We also had our helper Jess give the cubs a little talk about international scouting, Jess has been a member of the Scouting family for many years and has been in several different roles while volunteering, she has been to several different countries with Jamborees so her choice was Denmark. It was most interesting. We also made a start on our egg experiment by putting eggs in vinegar to soak for next week.
The third week was good fun. It was our Egg Eggsperiments night.
1
This is the experiment we prepared last week when we put the eggs in vinegar to soak for a week..The result was the shell had completely dissolved and left a seethrough rubber egg, it was very wierd. We squeezed some of them to see how strong it was, this one burst but it took a surprising amount of pressure to make that happen.
2
These eggs were the eggs without their shells, we put one in water and one in cola. The result was meant to be the egg in cola was supposed to shrivel as water left the egg and the egg in water was supposed to expand as it soaked up the water. It didn’t work very well,we wern’t sure how long we had to leave them so we have left some of them for a week and wil see on Tuesday the result, there may just be a nasty smell in HQ yuk!
3
This experiment was to put normal hens eggs in water and try to make them float. The theory is that fresh eggs will sink while older eggs will float, due to fresh eggs having an air pocket at one end; as air passes through the eggshell the air pocket gets bigger until the egg rises to the surface, theoretically. All the eggs did sink which meant they were all fresh and in order to make them float we added salt to the water. After several attempts and a bucket ful of salt we managed to get our eggs to float, success!!
4
The next experiment was to see how hard the shell was, the cubs had to squeeze it at either end and attempt to break the egg, none of them managed it which was the expected result, so I showed them that it was possible to break an egg easily by squeezing it either side which is what i did, the result was hilarious as one of the cubs was standing a bit too close and got egg yolk all over the front of his jumper as the egg splattered everywhere, ha ha ha, his face!!
5
The final experiment was again about the strength of eggs, we got our cubs to take their shoes and socks off and stand on a tray of eggs, they were very brave.Wemanaged to get about five cubs on the trays before one of them stood on it wrong and broke some, egg all over the feetha ha, it was good fun and all the cubs and adults had a good laugh,
The night was good fun.
