🦫 Beavers (Ages 6–8)
Beavers are young explorers aged 6 to 8, and they’re usually the second step on a young person’s Scouting journey.
In Beavers, children are introduced to a world of adventure, teamwork, and new experiences — all in a safe, inclusive, and exciting environment. It’s about learning by doing, making friends, and starting to build the skills and confidence that will last a lifetime.
🌟 What Do Beavers Do?
Beaver Scouts take part in fun-filled, age-appropriate activities that help them grow in confidence and curiosity. These include:
- Outdoor adventures like woodland walks, nature trails, and mini camps
- Craft projects, problem-solving games, and team-building challenges
- Community visits and learning about the world
- Earning badges by trying new things and developing helpful habits
- Singing, storytelling, and celebrating big occasions together
All activities are designed to support personal development, teamwork, and a sense of belonging.
👕 Uniform and Promise
Beavers wear a light blue sweatshirt as part of their uniform, along with their Group neckerchief once they’re invested.
During their investiture ceremony, Beavers make a simple but meaningful promise that reflects the values of kindness, helpfulness, and doing their best — all in an age-appropriate way.
🤝 Led by Volunteers
Our Beaver Colony is run by a team of trained, DBS-checked volunteers, many of whom are parents or former Scouts themselves. Their goal is to create a fun, supportive atmosphere where every child can thrive.
We actively encourage parent helpers and welcome new volunteers to get involved – even if just for the occasional session!
📍 Where and When
Our Beavers meet on Monday nights term time from 6:00-7:30 at our Scout HQ in Washington Village. Please contact us for current meeting times.
Scouting is very popular in our area, and our District operates a central waiting list. You can register your child via the Houghton-le-Spring Scouts Join Page.
🚀 Join the Fun
Whether they’re learning how to build a shelter, earning their first badge, or simply making a new friend, Beavers is the perfect introduction to a world of adventure and discovery.
Their activities are based around making things, outdoor activities, singing, playing games, going out on visits, investigating nature, listening to stories, learning how to be safe and most importantly, making new friends. They will also have the opportunity to take part in the fun and excitement of camps and sleepovers. It may be the first time they spend a night away from home so it’s a real adventure for them.
Beavers take part in a balanced programme of activities which leads to them gaining their highest award which is called the Chief Scout’s Bronze Award.
Join us and watch your child grow in confidence, one badge at a time.
